How do I play?

The game is about picking winners and assigning points. First pick the winners of the individual games. Then assign confidence points based on the level of confidence and number of games in that week. Your most confident pick would have the most points and your lowest would get the least points. For every game you pick correctly you receive the points you assigned. These are totaled up for your weekly points score. Player with the highest score wins the week.
Back

How do I win the week?

To win the week in any pool you need to have the highest total points. Should two or more players be tied, then the player with more correct picks (Wins) will be declared the winner. Should two or more players still be tied then the TieBreaker points total will be used. The player closest to the correct total without going over will be declared the winner. Should it still be tied after that, all players involved would be awarded a Win for the week.
Back

What about tie games?

The TIE button is available to use for your picks. If the game does end in a tie and you chose TIE instead of WIN or LOSE then you would receive the points for that game. If you choose TIE and the game does not end in a tie, then it would be considered an incorrect pick and you would receive no points.
Back

What about the points?

Big Soggy Sports uses a confidence points system. The more you think a game is a win, then the more points you would assign. A normal week in the reguar season would have 16 games so your most confident pick would be 16 points and your least 1 point. The current season will always have a 16 point game for the regular season. The lowest point can vary between 1 and 4 depending on the number of games in that week. Check the top box of the Picks page to see what the point range is for that week. Should a point value be missed or used twice, an error message will show at the top of the screen and will need to be corrected.
Back

Why are the total points different week to week?

The difference can be attributed to the scheduling for a pool and the total number of games in a week for a pool. For certain pools (eg. Pro Playoff) different point values can be assigned week-to-week to accommodate competition.
Back

Who sets the schedule?

Currently the schedules are created outside site for most pools and determined by their respective leagues. For the Big Soggy College pool, the Competition Committee meets during the off season to chose the games to use for the season. Normally teams who have won their conference or division the previous season are considered first. Special games such as traditional rivalries and in-state match ups are also considered.
Back

What about the Survey?

The Survey Poll on the opening page is just asking for your vote. No need to login or register anything to vote or look at the results. These polls change on a weekly basis.
Back

What is the Smack Board?

The Smack Board is a place bulletin board for a player to Run smack, vent problems, issue challenges or just spout off. You will need a seperate login and registration for some of the features, but is fairly straight forward. Entrance to it is available under the Specials heading on the menu bar. Please watch what you say there as there are under age participants on the site.
Back

Do I need a logon for the Smack Board?

Having a logon would be nice for all the features there such as a signature, but it is not 100% required to leave messages there.
Back

How do I win the season?

To win the season in a pool, a player must have the most total points accumulated over the season. Should two or more players be tied, then the total number of correct picks (Wins) accumulated for the season is used. Should two or more players still be tied, then the total number of Weeks Won during the season is used. Should two or more players still be tied, then the Competition Committee will meet to determine what to use to decide a champion.
Back

How many pools can I play?

There is no limit to how many pools a player can be active. Currently there are only the Four available pools for a player to join. The future may hold the possibility of more pools to come.
Back

Why does it take so long to load?

There are a few database queries and java applets on the opening page. So some servers and connections may take longer to load the opening page.
Back

How do I turn off the sound?

A player can check the Sound box on the User Info page. Although now the only sounds are on the Opening page and on the Picks pages themselves. These cannot be overridden.

Back

What are the Standings?

The Standings pages report the current standings for the current season for the different pools. The Current Overall, Top 5's, All-time, All-time Top 10, and Career pages are currently the only reports for standings for a player. There is a page for the NFL standings with possible playoff qualifiers. This is not 100% accurate as some matchup data is not checked in Big Soggy in determing the NFL standings.
Back

Who is the PicksMaster? Where do I find his real name?

The PicksMaster is one who runs the Big Soggy web site. He does all the page maintenance and database work. He also has to make decisions along with the Competition Committee on scoring disputes and scheduling changes. As for the PicksMaster's real name, large cashier checks or PayPal donations will help make that happen.
Back

The Pollmaster does the weekly Power Polls for Pro and College. He does the Top 15 and Bottom 5 for each one. These are usually ready to go by Tuesday afternoon. As for his identity, he is as open to monetary donations as the PicksMaster is.

The Competition Committee is made up of long time players and programmers of the site. They make the decisions on scoring questions, rules changes, site modifications and set the College pool scheduling for the season. They can be contacted through the Credits page.
Back

What is the Digital Pool?

The Digital Pool is an experimental type of pool currently under review. It tracks when Pro teams usage of digits in the last position of their final score. The first team to use all 10 digits (0-9) would be declared the winner. The Competition Committee is reviewing this pool to see how people could "buy" a team at a certain rate. The owner of the winning team would win the prize money. The key is that the price of a team goes up as weeks go by.
Back

What about the clocks?

The Clocks page has many formats of clocks the PicksMaster has found on the web. Some may eventually get moved to other parts of the site. The clocks on the Picks pages are countdown clocks to the lock out of that week.
Back

What is with the early start weeks?

Due to Scheduling changes in the NFL, Some of the later weeks in the season will be starting on Thursday. Any complaints about this should be directed to the NFL front office. There is a link to NFL.com on the Links page. Trust me, The PicksMaster is not happy about this situation either.
Back

When do the scores get updated?

The Scores are usually updated by an admin during the game days. Depending game times and web access, most of the scores are updated within 24 hours of finish.
Back

When do I get my prize?

Trophies for the season are usually shipped out in February after the last pool is finished. It can depend on the time the PicksMaster can devote to getting it done. They are shipped all at once so only one trip to the post office is necessary.

Back

Can I contact other players?

Big Soggy does not publish its members email addresses. Your best form of contact would be through the Smack Board. Should members involved all agree, then the email addresses may be given to the requesting parties.
Back

What are those icons by some names?

Those denote the current reigning champions of the current pools. You can see which pools go with which icon by checking the bottom of the Weekly Results page.
Back

What are the Fake players?

The Fake players are non human players put into the system by the Picksmaster. Some are done Pre-Season, others during the season. These are used as measuring sticks for players to see how they would do if they ran their picks by certain ways. The names of the fake players should explain their function.
Back

What does this cost?

Technically, it does not cost a player anything to play. But Big Soggy is asking for a $5 per pool contribution (fee, tithe, gift, donation, whatever) to help offset the costs of hosting and shipping. Everybody at Big Soggy Sports appreciates your playing and benefaction. (yeah I used a thesaurus, so go look it up yourself).

Back

What kind of programming is this?

The current version of Big Soggy Sports is being done with an Access databases, ASP pages with VBSCRIPT, JavaScript and Applets spread through the system. As for thedesignn, upkeep and actual work done behind the scenes, that would be the PicksMaster doing that work. He knows it is sloppy and undirected at times with problems here and there, but he is working on it and a new version for the future. So feel free to shut the hell up.
Back

Where do you get your sports lines?

When doing the picks for All Favs and All Dogs, The PicksMaster does try to rotate around between ESPN, FOX Sports, and Jim Feist to take the lines they have generated. If no line can be found, then the pick generally goes with the home team as the favorite.

Why does someone with the a name like PicksMaster not win every season?

The PicksMaster is part of many pools and has much to do with the site. This can cut into The PicksMaster's research time on games. Also certain NFL teams have gone in the tank at the end of the season causing title hopes to fade away.
Back

Who won this thing last year?

Depending on which pool, you can check the Hall of Champions page. This list the current and previous winners by pool. Also on the opening page there is usually a rotating scroll showing the current leaders and champions. Also the previous seasons winners are notated on the Weekly Results pages with icons next to their name.
Back

How does a guy like the PicksMaster always get lucky at the Bowl games?

Contrary to popular belief, the PicksMaster does not rig any pool. The PicksMaster winning the Bowl pool three times is due to good research of current and historical play, checking the odds, and some lucky shots along the way with the high value games. The expansion of bowl games and additional players in the pool does make it more difficult each year.

You can contact the PicksMaster through the User Info page or send an email. there are links to send requests to add or drop a player from a pool there.
